Volunteer Program

If you want to make a difference in our community, please contact Valor HospiceCare & The Valor Institute for Palliative Medicine. We love our volunteers as they complete the circle of care for our patients, families and communities.

We offer various volunteer opportunities for areas of patient care, family and bereavement support and organizational assistance. Free training programs are provided by the Valor team related to our core values as well as palliative and hospice care.

Please see the Events section of our website for further details.

Volunteer Program

Valor HospiceCare & The Valor Institute for Palliative Medicine volunteers are trained in the values, philosophy and goals of hospice and palliative care. Training is certified to the standards of the State of Arizona and Arizona Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (AHPCO). Patient care and office volunteers address topics such as:

  • Care and Comfort
  • Physical and Emotional Support
  • Death and Dying Concepts
  • Emergency Procedures

Volunteers assist patients, caregivers and families in many ways, including:

  • Visiting with patients and assisting with home duties.
  • Helping with physical care for patients.
  • Providing grief and bereavement support.

Other Volunteer services include:

  • Sharing the hospice approach with the community.
  • Assisting with clerical and administrative tasks.
  • Organizing events and working with other community organizations.
  • Assisting with art and music therapies.

Our Journal/Memoir "Reflections" Program:

Our Journal/Memoir Program offers a valuable way in assisting our patients and their families in feeling good about who they are and how their lives matter. Many patients love to talk a lot about their lives and share stories, making them perfect candidates for our Volunteers to produce a journaling/memoir book. Volunteers receive a manual and training for proceeding with a journaling and memoir project.

Our Photography Program:

Our Photography Program captures cherished moments for our patients and their loved ones. Our professional photographer sets up an introductory meeting with our patients and their loved ones to go over any special needs and requests, sets up the photo session, spends several hours editing photos and presents the family with a very special package to keep and pass on to future generations.

Our Teen Volunteer Program:

Our teen volunteers visit patients each week and brighten their days with conversations, reading, playing games, listening to music or sharing other activities of mutual interest. They can also volunteer their time for special office projects. Our Teen Volunteer Program was designed to give teens the opportunity to build on their character and compassion and serves as a springboard to those interested in healthcare careers and serving others.

Our Pet Therapy Program:

Our Pet Therapy Program utilizes trained volunteers and their certified pets to provide emotional support for patients in end of life care and contributes to a better quality of life. Pets are an immense source of entertainment and it is proven that pets are a great source of calm.

Volunteer Training Program

Valor provides three volunteer training programs depending on the qualifications and needs of the individual:

  • Comprehensive training for volunteers who will visit patients.
  • "Fast Track" training for volunteers who have had prior volunteer training at a qualified hospice (must bring certification).
  • Core training for volunteers who will only conduct office and administrative support.
